History of Palace on Wheels Train

Palace on Wheels is one of most prestigious luxury trains of the world. Its nonpareil comfort, interiors and facilities makes it an all time favorite way to explore the royal land of Rajasthan. One can say that each and every bit of this luxury train tells an interesting tale about its existence.

The history of Palace on Wheels is as charming and glorious as itself. Well, it all started before independence of India, when this kind of luxury train with traditionally designed coaches was used as a favorite mode of transport (personal coaches) by the rulers of princely states of Gujarat, Rajputana, the Viceroy of British India and the Nizam of Hyderabad. In fact, each carriages of this luxury train of India have unique history of its own.

However, after independence of India in 1947, the Indian Railways decided to discontinue the use of these wonderful coaches because it wasn't viable to include them in normal passenger trains. But in the year, 1981-82, Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways made an effort to come together and started a new venture with an aim of providing special heritage tours for visitors to Rajasthan.

As a result, the Palace on Wheels embarked from Delhi on January 26, 1982 for its first journey powered by a steam engine. Later, with the course of time, RTDC and the Indian Railways departments together made many infrastructural alterations in the magnificent coaches of the Palace on Wheels train to make it more guest-friendly while keeping the royal aesthetics of the interiors alive.

Another milestone was achieved to this superlative train when a new air-conditioned meter gauge was launched on the lines of old heritage train. This new version of the luxury train consisted of 14 saloons, one bar cum lounge, 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars and 4 service cars. Each saloon had 4 cabins which were well equipped with bath and shower facilities. Moreover, to make the journey even more magical, the concept of personal 'Khidmatgars' or personal attendants was also introduced.

The latest amendment in the train service was made recently in the year 2009. In fact, it was relaunched and refurbished in August 2009 with a new exclusive royal decor, cuisine and itinerary. In addition, the train was voted as the 4th luxurious train journeys in the world in the year 2010. Today, the Palace on Wheels train runs on an exclusive route that begins from Delhi and consists of several stops such as Jaipur, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Ranthambore, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra.
